HP Proliant DL585 Review: As opposed to the Opteron 6100 Processors, AMD is a clear winner and the HP DL585 ProLiant server packs in a powerful processor but that is not all about it. As opposed to the Gateway and Dell offerings, HP's server is different for two reasons namely, the height and the full-width drawer towards the front that holds both, the primary and secondary daughter boards containing the memory and processors.
The Features That Make Up The HP DL585 To remove the drawer you simply press on the clip present on the top that then releases a large handle. By locking tabs to the side, this drawer can be completely slid out without the danger of accidental falls.
Now, both daughter boards are vertically stacked in the HP DL585 with each containing one processor sockets and a total of 24 DIMM slots. To access the bottom board the top board comes off easily with the help of two release handles.
HP allocates 12 DIMM sockets to each board or processor and the AMD chipset used actually can go all the way up to 512GB. Since 16GB DDR3 RDIMMs are expensive and will take only 32 of the 48 available sockets, it is actually better to go with the full house 8GB per socket configuration.
Coming to the front panel, you may think that the entire drawer space is taken up by the daughter boards but there are eight SFF hot-swap disk bays packed in as well. You can customize this configuration based on your requirement with near-line SAS models although 6Gbits/sec SAS drives are the best.
With 1GB of flash backed write cache and using the battery backup pack, the HP DL585 can support RAID5, P410i stripes and mirrors as standard and with appropriate licensing you can even use RAID6.
The horizontal SPI board in this server actually provides a total of four Gigabit ports to the backend with an expansion slot free to take in HP's dual port 10 Gigabit SFP module. This particular server also comes with iLO3 remote management and pairs of PS/2 ports and USB ports as well.
The system board offers up two internal USB ports, embedded SD card slot for the purpose of Virtualization and if need arises you can even add a SATA DVD drive to the front side. As you can see, this HP server is highly customizable and can expand as required.
To ensure power redundancy, it operates with four 1200 Watt hot-plug modules which provides more than required power for the four 2.1GHz 6172 Opterons that peak at 710W each.
The Verdict As long as price isn't a deciding factor, the HP DL585 is an excellent choice. While this particular model lacks the virtualization, remote management and processing density of the Dell PowerEdge R814, it suits those businesses that need server consolidation and massive expansion potential without sacrificing on storage options and remote management.
