Dell PowerEdge 2800 Product Review

The Dell PowerEdge 2800 is the first server to implement the all new Xeon Dual Core processor, there’s not one, but two 2.8GHz dual-core Xeons to assist you in the most demanding IT environments.

The 5U chassis of the Dell PowerEdge 2800 is well built and offers considerable storage capacity that is served by a hard disk bay with room for up to eight hard disks located at the front.

Speaking of the front panel, it is composed of heavy gauge steel, and located just above the drive bays is a discreetly stacked CD/ROM/floppy disk drive unit.

The hard disk backplane of the Dell PowerEdge 2800 is inviting with floppy and ATA interfaces, which can be unplugged and removed from the unit by simply release the onboard lever.

This feature also makes it easier 5.2 inch devices in the bays above, and with the side panel off, the front assembly can be removed to provide instant access to the backplane bays and connectors.

Moving onto the interior of the PowerEdge 2800, Dell has decided to go the modular route with this one to display the expansion slots in a horizontal daughterboard bolstered to the base and the motherboard set vertically.

The daughterboard of the Dell PowerEdge 2800 takes care of the SCSI services with the help of a LSI Logic dual-channel Ultra320 chipset, which is located towards the rear of the unit.

The processors of the PowerEdge 2800 are blanketed by two massive passive heatsinks that are cooled with the help of two dedicated 50mm fans, each mounted in their own hot swap carriers. That’s not all, there are another two larger hot swap fans to ensure the Dell PowerEdge 2800 doesn’t break a sweat.
