NetApp, Inc. (formerly Network Appliance, Inc.) is an American computer storage and data management company. NetApp was founded in 1992 by David Hitz, James Lau, and Michael Malcolm and is headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA. In 2013, NetApp was listed amongst the Silicon Valley Top 25 Corporate Philanthropists.

Of all its product offerings, NetApp’s filers are perhaps their most well-known. These filers use NetApp’s own proprietary operating system, Data ONTAP. This operating system includes code from Berkeley Net/2 BSD Unix, Spinnaker Networks technology, and other operating systems. Originally Data ONTAP only supported NFS, but later NetApp added CIFS, iSCSI, Fiber Channel as well as Fiber Channel over Ethernet. Now, NetApp provides two different types of Data ONTAP. These two types of operating systems are DATA ONTAP 7G and Data ONTAP GX. The GX version is based upon grid technology and is often referred to as a cluster platform. In 2010, these two systems were merged into one operating system, Data ONTAP 8. The new operating system has two distinct operating modes – 7-Mode and Cluster-Mode.
